The new ownership quickly pumped millions of euros into reshaping the club’s ambitions, and it paid off almost immediately. With more money to spend, the club quickly bought some of the best players in the world, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva, Edinson Cavani, Javier Pastore, and many more.
After the takeover, the club gained total dominance, winning one domestic title after another. However, one club that has managed to challenge the Parisiens is AS Monaco. One of the standout moments in this little rivalry was in the 2016/17 season when Monaco, spearheaded by a young Kylian Mbappe, stunned PSG to win the league title.
That title-winning campaign for AS Monaco marked Mbappe’s rise to stardom. For some reason, Monaco sold more than 60% of that title-winning team, including their star man, Mbappe, Bernardo Silva, Timoue Bakayoko, Benjamin Mendy, and many more.
With Neymar and Kylian Mbappe leading PSG’s attack, the club became totally unstoppable, winning several league titles before the former’s exit in 2023 and the latter’s departure to Real Madrid in 2024. The sad reality is that despite all the money PSG has spent, the club has not managed to win a UEFA Champions League trophy, which has remained the goal for quite some time now.
