Hertha BSC’s history began in 1892 when the club was founded. It started participating in competitive football in Germany in the early 20th century and became one of the most prominent teams in the country before the Bundesliga era. Hertha reached the German championship finals in the late 1920s and early 1930s, finishing as runners-up on a few occasions.
As one of the strongest teams in German football, it wasn’t surprising that Hertha became a founding member of the Bundesliga when the league was rebranded in 1963. Unfortunately, the club spent the initial seasons inconsistently in the league, leading to a few campaigns in the second division. However, the club continued to show good signs of improvement, which came into play in the 1970s.
Hertha BSC succeeded in domestic competitions in the 1970s, finishing as runners-up in the Bundesliga in the 1974/75 season. Two years later, the club reached the DFB-Pokal for the first time in its history, losing to Eintracht Frankfurt. While trophies were scarce in the club’s cabinet, the improvements were there for all to see, and it didn’t take long before the club took this form to European football.
Hertha made a run into the latter stages of the UEFA Cup in the 1978/79 season, reaching the semi-finals for the first time. Sadly, the club was knocked out by Red Star Belgrade. This kickstarted a period of financial difficulties for the club in the 1980s, impacting on-field performances. The club spent much of this decade outside the top flight and worked hard to rebuild. This paid off, as Hertha returned to the big league in the late 1990s to participate consistently in the Bundesliga.
Hertha gained more stability in the early 2000s, finishing in respectable positions to qualify for UEFA competitions like the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Cup. The club also won back-to-back DFB-Ligapokal titles in 2001 and 2002 after finishing runners-up in 2000.
