However, the most shocking of them all came in the 2017/18 season when Frankfurt beat Bayern Munich 3-1 in the final to lift the trophy. The club went into the tie as the underdog, going up against a club that had won the Bundesliga title seven years in a row. Fortunately for the underdogs, they stunned a Bayern side led by the legendary Jupp Heynckes. This victory secured the club’s spot in the Europa League, where the club has thrived greatly in the past six years.
The club won the UEFA Cup for the first time in 1980, beating Borussia Monchengladbach in an all-German final. After an exciting run that season, the club returned to the top of the competition in the 2021/22 season, beating Rangers on penalties.
Unlike Eintracht Frankfurt, Werder Bremen has enjoyed more success in domestic competitions. The club has won four Bundesliga titles, with the most recent one coming in 2004, when it also won the DFB-Pokal to land its first domestic double. Bremen also reached the final of the UEFA Cup (now the Europa League) in 2009, losing to Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 after extra time.
The club has formed a reputation for developing some of the world’s brightest stars, most notably Mesut Ozil, who went on to play for Real Madrid and Arsenal. The retired midfielder also won the World Cup with Germany in 2010, etching his name into the history books.
