Eintracht Frankfurt’s most significant achievement in German football came in 1959 when the club won its only Bundesliga title. Frankfurt has enjoyed more success in the DFB-Pokal than any other competition, having won the competition five times. The club tasted its first success in the competition in 1974 after defeating Hamburger SV 3-1 in the final, cementing its place as one of the major forces in German football. The Eagles successfully defended their title the following season, beating MSV Duisburg 1-0.
The club then went through a long drought in the competition before returning in 1981. This time, the Eagles beat 1. FC Kaiserslautern 3-1 to lift the title for the third time. The fourth triumph came seven years later after the club beat VfL Bochum 1-0 in the final. This win solidified Frankfurt’s reputation as one of the most successful in the competition.
Perhaps Frankfurt’s most memorable moment in the DFB-Pokal was the 2018 final against Bayern Munich. The Bavarians had heavily dominated German football, but Frankfurt’s 3-1 win was a statement win. Led by Niko Kovac, the Eagles stunned Bayern Munich to announce their return to the top of German football. This win inspired the club to aim higher, even in Europe. The club won the Europa League in the 2021/22 season, beating Rangers on penalties.
Mainz was founded in 1905, but the club hasn’t found success in German football. Itwon spent the majority of its history in the lower tiers before making a breakthrough in 2004.
The club then established itself as one of the most consistent in Germany under Jurgen Klopp, who honed his tactical skills at FSV Mainz before going on to do great things at Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, where he won several titles, including the UEFA Champions League.
