Brentford Football Club was formed in 1889 as an offshoot of the Brentford Rowing Club to keep its members active during the winter. The club took a few years to establish itself, but by the early 20th century, Brentford had carved out a place in English football. The club began competing in the Southern League before joining the Football League in 1920.
Brentford's first real period of success came in the 1930s. After earning promotion to the Second Division in 1932/33, the Bees quickly climbed further, securing a place in the First Division for the 1935/36 season. During the 1935/36 campaign, Brentford achieved their best-ever league finish, finishing fifth in the top flight. This was the pinnacle of their pre-war achievements, and it gave their supporters something to remember during the difficult years that followed.
The post-war years were less kind to Brentford. By the late 1940s, the club had dropped back into the Second Division, and a steady decline followed over the coming decades. Relegation to the Third Division came in 1953/54, and the club eventually found itself in the Fourth Division by the 1960s. Brentford continued to struggle in the lower tiers of English football for much of the 20th century.
However, the club experienced some stabilization in the early 1990s, climbing back to the third tier. Sadly, this was short-lived, as financial struggles hindered Brentford’s progress. The arrival of Matthew Benham in 2012 changed the club’s fortunes, creating the groundwork for what the Bees would achieve in the next decade.
The appointment of Mark Warburton as manager in 2013 coincided with a significant improvement in Brentford's performance. At the end of the 2013/14 season, they achieved promotion to the Championship and immediately began pushing for further progress. While Brentford consistently performed well in the second tier, it wasn’t until the 2020/21 season under Thomas Frank that they finally achieved their long-awaited promotion to the Premier League.
Brentford secured their spot in the top flight for the 2021/22 season through a play-off victory, defeating Swansea City 2-0. This promotion marked their first return to the top division in over 70 years, and the club adapted well to the challenges of Premier League football.
